New Way of Being
A Model for Transformation
THE TRANSFORMATION ARC
PROBLEM → PRESENCE → PURPOSE → POWER → A NEW WAY OF BEING
PROBLEM
Life presents friction, challenge, uncertainty and change.
A problem, in the way I use the word here, is not simply the circumstance itself.
It is the felt perception that something is wrong with what is happening — that this should not be happening, that something should be different, or that I, you or the situation need to change before things can be okay.
My past has shaped unconscious conditioning within me.
When that conditioning is activated, I can interpret the present through the lens of past experience and project those meanings into the future.
I may then struggle to see what is actually happening because I am relating not only to reality, but also to what my conditioning tells me reality means.
This does not mean change is unnecessary.
I can prefer change, want change, work toward change, or recognise that something genuinely needs to change.
The distinction is between:
“I want this to change.”
and
“This should not be happening.”
The transformational movement is:
Problem → Presence → Purpose → Power → A New Way of Being
THE METHOD
1. Understand → 2. Process → 3. Practise → 4. Experiment
1. UNDERSTAND
Learn to recognise what is happening beneath the experience of the problem.
Wound
Human vulnerability can be experienced through:
Fear — I am in danger
Shame — I am bad
Powerlessness — This is too much
Protection
In response to these vulnerable states, we learn strategies designed to protect ourselves:
Control · Comply · Avoid
We try to change what is happening.
We submit ourselves to what is happening.
Or we distance ourselves from what is happening.
Disconnection
When these strategies become automatic, we can lose connection with our own inner world and with the people around us.
Connection
The alternative is not passivity.
It is developing the capacity to remain connected with:
My Inner World ↔ Your Inner World
I can be present with my own thoughts, feelings, needs and choices while allowing you to remain connected with yours.
These dynamics can be explored internally, relationally and collectively.
2. PROCESS
Presence is the process of turning toward what is actually happening rather than immediately trying to control, comply with or avoid it.
I process the experience through three doors:
Thinking → Feeling → Choosing
Thinking
What am I believing, assuming, remembering or projecting?
What am I telling myself this experience means?
Feeling
What is actually happening emotionally and somatically within me?
Can I allow the experience to be here without immediately trying to get rid of it?
Choosing
What happens when I stop automatically obeying the old pattern?
What becomes possible when I allow myself to see more clearly?
This is where transcendence occurs within Presence.
Not by escaping the experience, but by becoming intimate enough with it that I am no longer completely identified with it.
I can experience fear without becoming fear.
I can notice shame without organising my life around shame.
I can recognise a projection without assuming it is reality.
Presence allows the pattern to be experienced, processed and seen through.
And as that happens, something deeper can become visible.
3. PRACTISE
Develop the capacities that support my ability to understand, process and respond differently.
Ten Skills That Amplify Transformation
Present Moment Awareness
Breathwork
Somatic Processing
Inquiry
Shadow Work
Mind Training
Self-Expression
Integrity
Leadership
Trust
The skills are not transformation in themselves.
They increase my capacity for transformation.
Through practice, I become increasingly capable of staying with what is happening rather than automatically reacting to it.
This allows Purpose to emerge more clearly.
PURPOSE
What is true?
What matters?
What do I genuinely want?
What do I need?
What is mine to do?
Purpose is not simply a life mission.
It is the authentic direction that becomes clearer when I am no longer fighting reality or automatically organising myself around old conditioning.
Presence reveals Purpose.
4. EXPERIMENT
Bring what I have discovered into real life.
Return to my agency in moments of friction through the Four Agents of Power:
FOCUS → THINK → SAY → DO
Where will I place my attention?
How will I relate to my thinking?
What needs to be said?
What will I actually do?
This is Power — not power over others, but the embodied capacity to consciously participate in what happens next.
Acceptance does not mean passivity.
I can fully acknowledge:
“This is what is happening.”
and still decide:
“I want to change it.”
I experiment with new ways of being:
Internally — in how I relate to myself
Relationally — in how I relate to others
Collectively — in how I participate in groups, leadership, community and culture
Then I pay attention to what happens.
I learn.
I adjust.
And when new friction arises, I return to Presence.
A NEW WAY OF BEING
I no longer need life to be free from friction.
I can increasingly open my heart to the friction inherent in being alive.
I can recognise the difference between:
wanting change
and
resisting the fact that this is what is happening now.
I am increasingly able to remain connected with myself and therefore more capable of genuine connection with others.
I can recognise conditioning without automatically becoming it.
I can allow experience to be processed rather than immediately trying to control, comply with or avoid it.
I can reconnect with what is true and exercise the agency available to me through my:
Focus · Thoughts · Words · Actions
A New Way of Being is not the absence of old patterns or the absence of difficulty.
It is an increasing capacity to meet reality as it is, discover what is true within it, and live powerfully from that truth.
