Shadow Work for Men

A Daily Practice to Transcend the unconscious, Reclaim your power & Lead with Presence.

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

~ C.G. Jung

Some men are running on unconscious momentum, repeating patterns that don’t serve them, influenced by others agenda’s, disconnected from their power, and reacting instead of leading.

This daily practice is designed to interrupt that.

It’s about awakening your whole self, even the bits that “aren’t allowed”.

Each part invites you to meet yourself honestly, move with intention, and show up with presence in every area of your life.

It’s simple.

It’s uncomfortable.

And it works, if you do it.

This is a daily ritual for the man who’s ready to stop running from himself and start leading from who he truly is.

What You Will Need

For each of these practices you will need.

  • Pen

  • Paper

  • A private place

  • Time without pressure

Note: 1 lined A4 sheet of paper takes approximately 5 minutes of non stop writing.

Morning Practice

1. SET THE CONTAINER (2 min)

Before journaling, pause and ground:

  • Breathe deep into your belly.

  • Sit upright, connected to the ground beneath you.

  • Say silently: "My Power is in my Presence."

If you have a bit more time and want to go deeper try this men’s breathing practice.

2. STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS (5 min)

Let it pour. No censor. No structure. Just flow.

Keep writing without stopping, editing, or judging.

Let the unconscious speak.

There are no right or wrong words here.

Just keep going.

3. What am I Avoiding (5 min)

Every day we see how the way we choose to focus, think, speak and act either feels authentic, powerful and on purpose or, it doesn’t.

Here I want you to take a moment to look at yourself clearly and ask.

“What do I know I am I avoiding in this area of my life?”

  1. Health

  2. Wealth

  3. Love/Partner

  4. Leadership/Relationships

  5. Service/Career

Write down at least one thing for each catagory.

4. WRITING THE ILLICIT (5 min)

Answer this on paper, similar to stream of consciousness, write, don’t stop writing, and write some more.

"what would I do, right now, if there were no rules and no consequences?"

If you feel uncomfortable about what you wrote being found out, simply find a way to dispose of the writing responsibly. Personally I like to take them to the beach and burn them, or throw them in the fire place. Knowing it is gone increases the freedom to write everything, and also feels like a release to get it out then burn it, a symbolic letting go ritual.

Evening Practice

5. SHADOW REFLECTION (10 min)

Trigger & Reaction

  • What triggered me today (think - frustrated, disappointed, low, disconnected)?

  • How did I react (Think - focus, thoughts, words or actions)?

  • What was the primary emotion underneath this (think - sad, scared, ashamed, powerless, alone, unworthy, vulnerable)?

Collapse

  • Where did I abdicate my authenticity?

  • Was I in Power Over or Power Under (another person)?

  • What was I avoiding?

Restoration of Integrity

  • What did I do that was out of my integrity?

  • What was the impact of this action on me and others?

  • If this situation comes up again how would ensure responded with authenticity, love and courage?

Action

  • What is one thing I can do tomorrow that honours this seeing?

6. INTEGRATION PRACTICE (5–10 min)

  • Movement: Practice shaking, stretching, breathing, and vocal toning to discharge any heavy energy.

  • Mirror Voice Memo: Stand in front of a mirror. Look yourself in the eyes. Record a spontaneous reflection from your authentic, loving, courageous self. Speak your truth aloud.

    “Tomorrow I want...”

Listen to it the following morning and evening. Let your own eyes and voice remind you who you are becoming.

Remember, there are no right or wrong answers here, you are stirring up what has been abandoned, forgotten, suppressed and avoided possibly for your whole life, go gently, be kind to yourself, and remember, there are no wrong thoughts, feelings or needs, as long as you see them as impermanent, internal, experiences of thoughts, feeling and needs rather than the truth about who you are and what you have to do, then we can Trust that bringing light to the dark can liberate you from resistance to life and free you to be the men you know we are.
